What You Need to Know About Pond Filtration

Fish dart beneath lily pads while the melodious sound of a waterfall tickles your ears. The fragrance of clean water and nearby flowers intoxicates your senses. Enjoying a naturally-balanced pond in your own outdoor setting is an attainable luxury every homeowner can experience. Most pond owners are aware of the importance that good water quality plays in a pond habitat. But not knowing how to get or keep water quality can prove challenging to some pond owners. A bit of basic knowledge will help you keep your pond looking beautiful and performing optimally throughout the season.

A good biological filtration system, teamed with a proper mechanical filter to remove solids before the water enters the biological filtration unit, is the most effective way to filter water.  With adequate biological and mechanical filtration, the need for clarifiers is eliminated altogether, thereby ensuring a natural ecosystem pond.

Understanding Pond Skimmers

Aquascape Signature Series Pond Skimmers

The primary job of a pond skimmer is to remove floating debris off the surface of a pond before it has a chance to sink to the pond floor. Removing the unsightly debris before it can collect on the bottom helps keep your pond healthy and beautiful while improving the water quality for your fish. The skimmer also houses and hides the pond pump and plumbing from view, which creates a more natural-looking pond. Combine a mechanical skimmer with a biological filter for optimal pond filtration.

The Job of a Pond Skimmer

Mechanical filters—or skimmers—remove leaves and debris before they sink and decay. They also hide the pump and plumbing so they aren’t visible in the pond. Box skimmers are the most common and easiest to maintain. Horizontal filter mats work best because they keep their shape, don’t clog easily, and prevent the pump chamber from running dry. As water enters the skimmer, large debris is caught in the basket, then finer debris is filtered before the water is sent to the biological filter.

Biological Pond Filtration Goes to Work

Biological filters receive pre-filtered water from the skimmer. Water flows upward through filter media that removes fine to medium particles, then spills over the waterfall lip to return to the pond. This creates natural aeration and helps maintain healthy water. Biological filters come in various sizes and can handle ponds up to 10,000 gallons, with larger ponds using multiple units.
