Prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.) are drought-tolerant,, sun-loving succulents widely used for food (pads/nopales, fruit/tuna) and as the host for the cochineal insect (Dactylopius coccus), which produces a natural crimson dye. The white, cottony substance on pads is the protective secretion of female cochineal insects. They are cultivated in arid regions, requiring well-drained, sandy soil and low water, with high cold tolerance (some to 0°F).
