The Barbados Cherry tree (Malpighia emarginata), often called Acerola, is a fast-growing, tropical evergreen shrub or small tree, reaching up to 12-15 feet tall, that produces bright red, highly nutritious, 1-inch fruits with a tangy, sweet-tart flavor. Exceptionally high in Vitamin C—containing 30–100 times more than oranges—the fruit ripens 3-4 weeks after pink flowers appear, typically from spring through fall. They are ideal for USDA zones 9B-11 and make excellent container plants.
